Preventing Flooding in Ellicott City

I will never forget working for weeks with residents, business owners, St. Peter’s Church, and the County to clean up Ellicott City’s Main Street after the 2018 flood. We know storms will continue to threaten Ellicott City, and we must continue investing in life-saving mitigation measures and infrastructure to protect our community.

In the years since the flooding, I have worked proactively with local, state, and federal partners to secure over $70 million of state funding for the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan, which will significantly reduce flood risk by strengthening infrastructure, managing stream debris, and expanding green space to better absorb stormwater. The plan includes three now-completed dry flood mitigation sites – the H-7, H-4, and Quaker Mill detention ponds – as well as the game-changing Extended North Tunnel project, on track for completion in 2027. For updates and to learn more about flood mitigation projects, you can visit the County’s site here.
